They are all so vain
Their voices high pitched and sickeningly sweet
They talk and talk about last night
Flaunting their jewelry so everybody sees
So not the day to think about the real thing.
(Achtung, baby, achtung!)

A black and white movie reel
Cheapest date I've ever been on-he's asking about a hotel suite
After all this, you're still waiting for your shining knight.
Go ahead and cut their veins
(Make them weep) Tonight, after locking away the red roses and hearts you'll seize

Achtung, baby, achtung!
   Attention!
The day was named after a saint!
(Oh for the love of Christ, who cares?)
   Think about it!
       Achtung, baby!

Pay attention!
"Fall before idols and false love
         All those saintly, gather round
Proclaim your love of gold to all this day
And use the metal for your crown
Someone's shivering, you couldn't care less
Wear his love like a see-through dress
That's it!"

God, what's happening-
Twisted, isn't it?
Achtung, baby!

Emo disclaimer. I wrote this for a school assignment where we had to write five stories featuring five sets of homonyms. I nearly screamed for joy when my teacher said poems and prose were acceptable. It borrows a little bit from the sestina form. Some more modern sestinas use homonyms instead of using the same words to end the lines, and I used that idea to easily incorporate the homonyms.

A big inspiration for the poem was U2's album Achtung Baby (you could probably tell). The album focuses on love gone bad and materialism over spirituality, both themes in the poem. Two lines are tributes to songs on the album; "so not the day to think about the real thing" refers to "Even Better than the Real Thing", and "wear his love like a see-through dress" is a variation on "she wears my love like a see-through dress" from "So Cruel".

Achtung is German for attention, by the way. That's about all the German I know.

This is really awesome! I like it! I also love how you use a German word in there.

Thank you so much! I love using foreign words in poems, it adds such impact. Unfortunately, I barely know any language other than English.
